I've been concentrating on getting a lot of commissions done to make way for next season. Next year is aleady looking busy so there's lots of new work on the way.

Jasper
I'm back... I've had some sleepless nights the last few weeks, not due to work but beause my wife Jodi and I brought baby Jasper into this crazy world. He's a cute kid with powerful lungs and big hands. Though the work has slowed to a crawl recently it hasn't totaly stopped. I'm still working on my one handed brush/baby technique so give me some time to work it out.

Tikitronic

Painted a custom tiki mug for the DVA Gallery's 2nd annual tiki show that opens June 17th in Chicago. Just in time for Zombie season. This one depicts the angry god searching and scouring the earth for the perfect drink. Notice the angry expression on his face, don't mess with tiki! 23 drinks later he is found buried in the sand with his twig-like pecker in the air waiting for his next unsuspecting victim.
Unfinished Work
I always find it hard to work during the few dry months we have in Vancouver. But as always the show must go on and that's exactly what I'm about to do. As some of you know I am a little backed-up so I decided to push the MINI show forward again to August for a few good reasons. My wife Jodi and I are expecting a new baby in a few weeks, and I wanted to finished all my back ordered commissions & illustrations before I move on to new work.
There have been quite a few requests for a preview of the MINI show and I will do so for all those who ask for it. I probably will have the show ready around August 4th so Keep checking back! Besides the MINI show also keep and eye out for a few upcoming group events on my sidebar. Keep the rubber side up!
A View From The Top
Luc found this in a copy of the Vancouver Sun a few weeks ago. It was an interesting article because it shows one of the oversized slat-wood pieces that I painted for Metropolitan Home a few years back. It now lives in the jungle-themed room of the Chateau Macklam. I always wonder where these things wind up.
The Graveyard of Ambition
Vancouver is a tough place for art. I know, I used to run a small gallery with my wife Jodi. Most of our interest and sales were from European and American tourists. What does that say about this place? I always thought that maybe it was the skyrocketing rental and condo prices that were draining people's bank accounts. Or maybe it was that we just didn't buy enough ads in the local newspapers. No, I think it's deeper than that. I think that Vancouver is cultivating a culture of apathetic oblivions. We are importing millionaires by the bucketload but they are not bringing art and culture with them, they are forcing it out and driving it away. I thought I was crazy until I found this piece in the Vancouver Revue by Paul Delaney. Or have a look at this piece from the Only Magazine by Amil Niazi. Here's another story from a few years ago in Vancouver Magazine that initually shook me out of the money tree.
I know there are many creative people here who have decided to stick it out. There are even a few who have managed to make a successful living with their work... by showing elsewhere. Including myself. I'm a brain drainer. Not because I choose to be, but because it's become necessary for survival. Which brings me to the point of this rant. I get tons of email from people asking me why I don't show in Vancouver. My answer is always the same, local galleries aren't interested and most of my sales are in the US. I spent ten years pounding my head against gallery doors with no progress. It wasn't until we opened our own gallery that I started to see results and sales. In the end we decided the out-of-control retail rent was outweighing the benefits of having a public place for art. Which is why I now only exhibit from the website.
Hey, I really love Vancouver, it's a beautiful place with beautiful people but we need to start thinking about what is really happening to this great city. Yes, I'm still here and I'm not planning on leaving just yet. There will always be a small place for art here. Even if it's in this tiny walk-in closet I call my studio.

Retro Futuristic
Motortrend Classic asked me to do another image for their upcoming magazine. It's about the disappearance of the retro-futuristic-space-vehicle's at the big car shows. Is it just me or does everything look like a variation of a souped up Honda these days? If you haven't seen this magazine and you're a collector like me, you have to find a copy of Motortrend Classic
The Scoots!
The Scoots!
Found a stack of prints today while I was doing some clean-up. When we closed the Moon Base Gallery I put all of our acquired art in storage for safe keeping. I was digging through it today and found a print that Kenn & Dave at ESM Artificial / Poplab made for me a few years back. I think at the time I though they were making fun me as usual. The scooter jokes got a lot of rotation while hanging out with those guys. Now that I had time to think about it I'm extremely flattered and wish I would have thanked them more back in the day. Thanks Kenn & Dave.
Top Movies
Illustrated the latest Top Movies cover for the Georgia Straight Magazine. Hit the streets this morning in Vancouver.
Two Thousand and Six
What can I say, I've turned on the internal coffee machine. 2005 was a busy year and 2006 is looking even busier. What's in store? I killed the music on the homepage so no more sniveling. Keep an eye out for the upcoming Jupiter Project Book launch and art show in Chicago this spring. I have an animation project in the works, a book of my own that I will release in late 2006, a new URL (atomos.ca), new serigraph prints, more PINK than ever and a few big shows. For now I'm trying to finish some projects (you know who you are) and starting on a new season with a slightly altered style and some fresh images. I'm going to need a bigger capsule! There are still a few shows up and running and some new paintings still available.
Cosmic Cocktail at the DC-Gallery until January 26, 2006
Pink Elephant at the Lunar Boy Gallery until January 14, 2006
House Sale at the DVA Gallery until February 4, 2006
